Our WHY

Our story begins in Venezuela, a nation once known for its prosperity, happiness, and wealth. However, over two decades of government mismanagement have left the country in shambles, its people struggling for the most basic necessities, and their spirits tested beyond measure. The Venezuela of today is a far cry from the vibrant, thriving place that many of us once called home.

I was lucky to grow up in Venezuela. We were rich in the essentials of life: prosperity, community, quality education, access to opportunity, an idyllic climate, and breathtaking natural beauty that drew immigrants from all corners of the globe.

Amidst this splendor, one aspect of our culture stood out—our love for street food. Venezuela had a strong tradition of savoring street snacks, and among them, our beloved hot dogs, or "Perros Calientes," reigned supreme. To this day, each neighborhood boasts its own cherished "perrero," local hot dog carts, and people travel great distances to savor the flavors of their favorite stand. These carts are more than just food vendors; they are at the heart of our communities, where friends and families gather to chat, make new friends, and share laughter.

In 2016, moved by the desire to give back, we launched "Perros y Vainas” in New York City. Our mission was to raise funds to support organizations fighting childhood hunger in Venezuela. By the time we were forced to close due to the pandemic in 2020, and through a partnership with local NGO Alimenta Venezuela, we were feeding 120 kids a day across the poorest slums around Caracas.

In 2023, we re-open at The Battery, in downtown Manhattan. This time, we have recreated a Venezuelan beach. A space where visitors and locals gather, conversations flow, friendships are formed, and vulnerable immigrants can get dignified jobs to help them kick off their new lives on solid ground.

We strive to become hubs for connection around Venezuela's vibrant street food culture and legendary hospitality. A place where every dish served supports a brighter future for children in our homeland and beyond.
